As soon as I saw this photograph, I knew I had to paint it. I was blown away by the fantastic combination of various shades of red and orange, as well as how nature and traditional architecture complimented each other so well.

This particular scene is of a Japanese torii, which is a traditional gate usually found in front of temples and shrines.
The photo was taken by my friend Dale, who kindly gave me permission to recreate it. He has taken lots of other great pictures which you can view on his photo album site here, but this one was my favourte.

As you can probably tell, I enjoy painting nature scenes the most, but also love painting in bright colours. It's not often that I can do both at the same time.
